The meeting was chaired by Ms. Farzana Altaf Shah, Deputy Director, Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (PAK EPA) and was widely attended by the stakeholders including member of civil society, representatives from public and private sector organizations, academia, environmentalists and media. The public hearing was held in compliance with Section 12 of the Pakistan Environment Protection Act, 1997, and IEE/EIA Regulations 2000. </td> </tr> <tr style="font-size: 12px; font-family: Arial"> <td style="padding-right: 8px; padding-left: 8px; padding-bottom: 8px; padding-top: 8px; height: 17px; text-align: justify" valign="top">The Deputy Director, PAK-EPA in her opening remarks appreciated CIIT for fulfilling the legal requirements under the Pakistan Environment Protection Act, 1997 and delineated the purpose of holding the public hearing. </td> </tr> <tr style="font-size: 12px; font-family: Arial"> <td style="padding-right: 8px; padding-left: 8px; padding-bottom: 8px; padding-top: 8px; height: 17px; text-align: justify" valign="top"> <table style="width: 100%"> <tr> <td style="width: 738px" valign="top"> After the opening remarks by Deputy Director, PAK-EPA, Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi, S.I., Rector, CIIT briefed the august forum on the founding philosophy of CIIT. The Rector, CIIT expressed that one of the principal considerations before CIIT while conceiving development projects is that they should be environment friendly. The Rector, CIIT assured the participants and officials of PAK-EPA that CIIT is committed to construct energy efficient buildings while strictly observing the national building codes. Tahir Naeem, Director (Planning, Development & Human Resource Development ~ P,D & HRD), CIIT. The Director (P, D & HRD) expressed that maintaining safe, attractive campus(es) with academic, research, social, cultural and recreational facilities has been the guiding principle for the CIIT management while planning and designing its campuses. Over recent years, the Institute has delivered a number of projects which have been praised for their quality of work, judicious use of space and other resources. In planning, for the civil works of its campuses including the one at Islamabad, it is envisaged that the Institute will add richly to the environment and would register its presence thus adding economic and cultural vitality and architectural distinction to the area. Saadat Ali. The presentation covered comprehensively, inter alia, the project objectives, project activities and their scope, analysis of alternatives, project phases, present situation of environment at the project site, environmental impacts and mitigation measures and environment management plan. </td> <td style="text-align: left"> <img src="Images/Pic3.jpg" width="203" /></td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> <tr style="font-size: 12px; font-family: Arial"> <td style="padding-right: 8px; padding-left: 8px; padding-bottom: 8px; padding-top: 8px; height: 17px; text-align: justify" valign="top">The stakeholders present in the public hearing took keen interest in the project details and raised questions related to, inter alia, structural design of the buildings, waste water treatment plant, water consumption / conservation, energy conservation, solid waste management and vehicular traffic management. The Director (P, D & HRD) along with the project team and consultants responded to the queries. </td> </tr> <tr style="font-size: 12px; font-family: Arial"> <td style="padding-right: 8px; padding-left: 8px; padding-bottom: 8px; padding-top: 8px; height: 17px; text-align: justify" valign="top">The Deputy Director, PAK EPA in her concluding remarks emphasized on the need for implementing the proposed Environmental Mitigation Plan as described in the EIA study and in light of the recommendations made during the public hearing.
