The two-days Coordinated Digital
Library Training, which was the 5th, in the series, was organized at CIIT Abbottabad,
on August 04 and 05, 2009.
The workshop was organized by the Department of Library Information Services, CIIT, Islamabad, in collaboration with the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications, UK. The Workshop, which was proficiently conducted by a 4 members team, consisting Raja Muhammad Ibrahim, (Senior Librarian and the Master trainer), Syeda Nasreen Sultana, (Librarian), Hafiz Abdur Rehman, (Deputy Librarian), and Nafeesuddin, (Deputy Librarian, CIIT, Abbottabad), was attended by 30 enthusiasts, including the faculty members, students and the Library Staff. The main objective of the workshop was to promote the ‘efficient’ use of the HEC digital library and to enhance the awareness level of the intellectual community of CIIT about hundreds of vitally important electronic resources, available free of cost, through the HEC Digital library. The workshop also aimed at improving the students’, faculty members’ and the library staff’s skills and expertise in searching and accessing the required material in the digital environment The workshop was based on “hands-on” training which provided the participants with an opportunity to practically navigate through various databases and websites and access the required information, full text articles, e-books and other like material. Besides journals’ article and e-books, the participants were also briefed about different type of special material, such as transactions, proceedings, protocols, reviews, newsletters, indices, abstracts, interviews, etc. which are available free of cost at HEC digital library. The resources available at all the 19 databases of the digital library were included in the training. Various searching options, techniques and strategies were practically demonstrated by the trainers and the participants were asked to work, individually and also in groups, on different searching assignments and complete the exercises given in their workbooks. A brief introduction of the resources available at the website of E-brary was also given to the participants in the end. During the question/answer session encouraging feedback was received. According to the majority of the participants, just one day workshop helped them accessing and downloading several research papers in their areas of studies. They pointed out that before attending the workshop they had not been at all familiar with various useful searching tips, procedures, techniques and strategies explained by the trainers. The participants highly appreciated the organizers for arranging the workshop which, they mentioned, brought forward a wealth of useful information about numerous open-access resources of HEC digital library. Many of the participants who attended the workshop on day 1 insisted on attending the sessions even on the second day. After many vigorous, fruitful sessions the workshop was finally concluded on the vote of thanks by the participants who keenly requested the resource persons to organize more and more such workshops in future too. |
